SASSA Child Support Grant suspended – Why and What to do

Every few months, SASSA reviews Child Support Grants to ensure that those who qualify are receiving them. The purpose of this is to detect if any candidates are incorrectly receiving the grant.
To do this, SASSA needs to follow a process and will notify recipients 3 months in advance if their grants are going to be subject to a review process.

Why does SASSA suspend Child Support Grant?

  • The child is no longer in your care
  • There is a debate about who the primary caregiver of the child is (in this instance, an investigation will take place)
  • Failure to cooperate when the child’s grant is up for review
  • If fraud was committed or misinterpreted information was provided
  • The child has passed away
  • The child has been admitted to a state institution
  • The beneficiary (caregiver) does not collect the grant for 3 consecutive months
  • The child is absent from the country
  • The child turns 18 (in this instance, the grant will only be suspended at the end of the child’s birthday month)

How can I make sure my CSG is approved again?

  • You will need to supply SASSA with proof of identity of the child
  • You will need to provide proof that the child is still in school (download the school attendance form here)
  • You will need to prove to SASSA that you are still the primary caregiver of the child (i.e. has not changed since the initial applications)

Once SASSA has conducted its investigation, and the beneficiary has passed the review, the grant will be reinstated.

What should you do if your grant is suspended?

If your SASSA child support grant is suspended/ not approved you will be informed in writing. Should you disagree with the claims, you must go to the Appeals Tribunal within 90 days of being notified about the grant denial. If you miss the 90 day window, appeals for the grant will only happen in certain/ exceptional circumstances.
