Who can apply for the SASSA Extended Child Support Grant?
SASSA has sent a request to the caregivers of children who do not have parents (owing to being deceased) or do not know the whereabouts of a parent to apply for the Extended Child Support grant. SASSA created this extended grant opportunity to avoid children from entering the foster care system process purely because they need financial support.

How much is the Extended Child Support Grant?
This Child Support Grant (CSG) Top-Up is a new grant with an additional R250 being added to the standard R500 grant amount. The provision of this policy also allowed for the Minister of Social Development to introduce a higher-value child support top-up for orphans, which commenced in June 2022.
The current child support grant amount sits at R750 and can be paid to the beneficiary (caregiver) in cash at specific pay points on a specific day, or paid directly into their bank account.
(These amounts were updated as of 1 April 2023, and will be updated again on 1 October 2023).
Who can receive the Extended Child Support Grant?
To qualify for the Extended Child Support grant, the beneficiary (caregiver) must provide SASSA with the following documents:
- Death certificates of both the child’s parents OR
- Death certificate of the primary parent and an affidavit confirming that the whereabouts of the other parents are not known and that they play no role in caring for the child.
