SASSA SRD Grant Rejected – Why and What to do

If you or someone you know has had their SASSA grant application rejected, it can be for several reasons. Here, we will discuss some of the reasons your application may have been rejected and what you can do.

The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD), also known as the R350 grant, is a key support mechanism for many unemployed people within the country. It was put in place to ensure that vulnerable people receive a sum of money that will help them support themselves with their basic needs.

SASSA has stated that there may be several reasons why individuals find that their SRD R350 grant is being rejected. Beneficiaries are encouraged to first find out why their grant application was denied and then look at what they can do to gain approval before they reapply.

Your SRD grant may be rejected because you may not meet the relevant eligibility requirements, such as:

  • You are employed and have made income tax contributions
  • Your details do not match that of the ones provided to the Department of Home Affairs
  • You are a current recipient of a Social Grant that is other than a Child grant
  • You are registered and benefit from the National Student Fund Aid Scheme(NSFAS)
  • You qualify for UIF benefits based on TEARS/ contributions to UIF
  • You are currently receiving the Unemployment Insurance Fund benefit
  • You are employed at a government institution
  • You do not meet the age requirements/ are above 60 years old
  • You have been registered as deceased on the Department of Home Affairs database

SASSA encourages individuals who have been rejected the SRD grant to NOT reapply immediately after their first application. This is because the system will automatically reject your second application as there is not enough time between your two applications.

Another reason why your application may be rejected is that your details may appear on a database of another financial aid entity. Should this be the case, you must request that your details be removed from said entity before you submit your appeal to SASSA.

Therefore, instead of reapplying immediately, you are encouraged to submit an appeal via the SRD grant appeal website, following the step-by-step guide on how to successfully lodge your appeal.
