SRD Grant has been extended for another year
In the medium-term budget policy speech (held on 1 November 2023), the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana announced that the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant would be extended for another year. This means recipients of the SRD grant will receive their R350 until 31 March 2025.
The government has allocted R34 billion for this particular grant, which is the sole source of income for millions of people living in South Africa.
A provisional allocation is retained over the medium term, and thereafter a comprehensive review of the entire social grant system will be finalised.
While the SRD grant was implemented as a temporary grant during the 2020 national Covid-19 lockdown, the grant has been renewed each year as many recipients have come to rely on it.
