SASSA SRD Grant Biometric Identity Verification – Facial Recognition Check
In a recent payment cycle (for December 2022), Postbank noticed suspicious activity in its systems that interrupted Social Grant Payments and acted as a cyber security threat. These threats affected recipients who use the gold payment card to withdraw their grant funds from ATMs. As a result, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) introduced new and secure measures to ensure recipients of the grant are protected and promised to alert them of any changes to their grant in ample time (should any changes occur).
As a result, SASSA released a statement stating (which can be found on the SASSA Facebook page) that grant recipients will now be required to engage in identity verification via facial recognition.

It also stated that SRD recipients who need to perform the below services will also need to engage in identity verification through facial recognition:
- Clearing of a referred status
- Recipients wanting to be paid through the ‘Cash Send’ method
- Recipients wanting to update their mobile number
- Recipients who have chosen to have a Postbank account opened on their behalf
Moving forward, recipients will now receive two SMS’s from SASSA and are to click on the link provided in the second SMS (the link will only be valid for 3 days (72 hours))
You also have the option to contact the SASSA Call Centre at 0800 60 10 11 and request the SMS to be resent to you.
Another way grant recipients are encouraged to ensure maximum security is to use their private bank account for payments. SASSA encourages this as it will be beneficial for the recipient to use their correct banking details, ensuring payments are made on time.
