SASSA SRD Grants Stats 2022 – refugees and asylum seekers
SASSA has paid more than R34 million to refugees and R63 million to asylum seekers through the SRD grant.
From continuous statements and questions from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the social development minister (Lindiwe Zulu) has revealed that more than 4000 refugees and 15 000 asylum seekers have received state assistance from the SASSA R350 SRD grant. The SRD grant is aimed at South African citizens, asylum seekers, refugees, and special permit holders between the ages of 18 and 60 years old.
Zulu stated that SASSA has paid more than R34 million to refugees and R63 million to asylum seekers. These are the monetary figures for September, but Zulu has stated that it can vary from month to month, depending on approvals.

Zulu also states that the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance (ITSAA) has received over 3 million appeals for the SRD grant from April to July. The Independent Tribunal has made a formal judgment on all appeals that were received against the declined SASSA SRD applications for June. The appeals were recorded as 1,165,369 in April 2022; 1,297,776 in May 2022; and 516,442 in June 2022; and 588,401 in July 2022.
Zulu states that some appeals relating to June had a 90-day period that expired during the first week of October. The remainder of the appeals that are still outstanding are still within 90 days and will expire during the relevant months in line with the period in which they were received.
