How many recipients are receiving social grants from SASSA

SASSA recently released a statistical summary of social grants recipients in South Africa. They provided a breakdown of the number of recipients for each grant type, according to province, as at 31 March 2023.

According to SASSA, the total number of SASSA grant recipients was 18 829 716 at 31 March 2023. This is an increase from previous months (December 2022 saw 18 778 922 people receiving grants, while January and February 2023 saw 18 791 218 and 18 828 600 grant recipients, respectively). This number excludes SRD grant recipient, of which there are currently 11 million people depending on this as their only source of income.

The Child Support Grant had the most recipients of all the social grant, at over 13 million. Most of these grant recipients reside in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Gauteng and then Limpopo.

The second highest number of social grant recipients was the Old Age Grant, with more than 3.8 million people. Most of these grant recipients reside in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Gauteng and then the Eastern Cape.

The third highest number of social grant recipients was the Disability Grant, with more than 1 million people. Most of these grant recipients reside in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by the Eastern Cape, and then the Western Cape.

The fourth highest number of social grant recipients was the Grant-In-Aid, with more than 320 000 people. Most of these grant recipients reside in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Limpopo, and then the Eastern Cape.

The fifth highest number of social grant recipients was the Foster Care Grant, with more than 270 000 people. Most of these grant recipients reside in Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and then Gauteng.

Lastly, for the month of March 2023, only 15 people received the War Veteran’s Grant. Most of these grant recipients reside in the Western Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and then Gauteng.
 

An overview of the SASSA statistical summary of social grants shows that, at 31 March 2023:

  • There were 18 829 716 social grant recipients in March 2023 (this exclude the R350 SRD grant).
  • The highest concentration of social grant recipients reside in KZN (4 137 649 recipients), followed by Gauteng (2 936 952) and the EC (2 871 998).
  • The lowest concentration of social grant recipients reside in the Northern Cape (526 335).
  • The number of social grant recipients is on an upward trend, from December 2022.
