SASSA Gold Cards Expiring in 2023 valid until 31 December 2023
Updated on 3 May 2023: SASSA announced that grant recipients with expired gold cards can continue using their cards until 31 December 2023.
Last month, SASSA called on all grant holders with gold cards expiring in March 2023, to collect their new gold cards at post offices across the country.
Most card holders have collected their new cards – if you have not collected yours yet, you should do so as soon as possible.
SASSA grant recipients with gold cards expiring in April 2023 can now also collect their new gold cards from post offices across the country. SASSA has asked that recipients not try collect their new cards before they have expired as this will lead to a backlog in the system. You should only collect your gold card in the month it expires.
In March 2023, there were 159 466 gold cards expiring and 861 952 gold cards expiring in April 2023. In the upcoming months, there are more than 2.7 million cards expiring in May 2023 and more than 1.8 million cards expiring in June 2023.
When can I collect my new Gold Card?
Older Persons Grant and Disability Grant
If you are a recipient of the Old Age Grant or the Disability Grant, you must collect your new gold card on a Monday or Tuesday, from your nearest post office.
Child Support Grant and all other grants
If you are a recipient of the Child Support Grants or any other grants, you must collect your new gold card on a Wednesday; Thursday; Friday or Saturday, from your nearest post office.
Recipients are urged to please collect their new gold cards only on the days as stated above, to ensure that everyone is attended to and to avoid long queues.
Can I collect my new gold card before it expires?
No – you can only collect your new gold card in the month it expires. Please check the front of your card for the expiry date. If it is expiring in April 2023, it will say “04/23” on the front, if it is expiring in May 2023, it will say “05/23” and so on.
What documents must I bring when collecting my new gold card?
Bring your original ID document (green book or ID card), as well as your expired gold card to your nearest post office.
If you have lost your expired gold card, you will still be issued with a new gold card.
Can someone else collect my new gold card for me?
No – all gold card holders must collect their own new gold card. No-one is allowed to collect your new card on your behalf, unless they have been registered with SASSA to collect for you.
What are the Post Office operating hours?
Most post offices operate from Monday to Friday, from 8am until 4pm. They also are generally open on Saturday, from 9am until 1pm and closed on Sundays. Please check the operating hours of your nearest post office branch as their hours may differ.
