Disability grant recipients who are declined can Appeal

The Disability grant is one of the social grants paid by SASSA. This particular grant is intended for adults who are living with a physical or mental disability, which makes it difficult or impossible to work for 6 month or longer.

The South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) is now encouraging disabled grant applicants to lodge an appeal should their application be rejected or the result be unsatisfactory.

How long does the appeal process take?

This appeal must be lodged within 30 days of the applicant receiving their rejection letter, with the process of the appeal taking another 30 days. Should the applicant not understand the reason their application got rejected, they then have the right to ask SASSA officials for clarity on the matter.

What is the criteria for the disability grant?

Before you appeal, make sure you do qualify for the disability grant – in order to qualify, you must meet these criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee living in the country
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 59 years old
  • Be willing to partake in medical or functional assessment to confirm their disability
  • Provide clinical information or a referral form, confirming their disability
  • Provide a form that is duly completed by a medical practitioner/ treating facility should you be previously rejected on medical grounds
  • Be subject to a Means Test (both the applicant and their spouse)
  • Not be living in/ being taken care of in a State-funded institution
  • Not be receiving any other form of a social grant
  • Submit their 13-digit barcoded ID document/ smart ID card of both themselves and their spouse. (Should the candidate not be in possession of an ID/ birth certificate, any alternate form of identification provided by SASSA will be accepted)

What is the appeal process?

SASSA works closely with professional medical contracted doctors to ensure that applicants who qualify receive the grant. It’s important to note that the doctors who are contacted work under strict supervision and follow the approved regulations and guidelines from SASSA and the Department of Health.

Only doctors medically contracted by SASSA may conduct these assessments. They then submit their reports to SASSA that determine if the applicant qualifies for a temporary or permanent disability grant. This assessment report is based on both information that is provided to the doctor, as well as a physical assessment.

What happens after the appeal is resolved?

Once the grant is approved, beneficiaries will then receive an amount of R2090 per month, stated the Minister of Treasury in October 2023.
