If you have just given birth to a new baby and are wondering if you may apply for a Child Support Grant or if there is a waiting period, the good news is you can apply right away! Let’s have a quick look at some questions you may have about the SASSA CSG below.

To start, you may be wondering how much the Child Support Grant is – at the moment it stands at R530 per child, per month. This is the value from April 2024 and is set to increase again in October 2024. There is also an additional top-up amount of R250 per month, per child.

• What is the age criteria of the CSG?

This grant is intended for children under 18 years old – meaning children anywhere from newborn age up until the last day before their 18th birthday may qualify.

• Must the child be living with one or both parents to qualify for the CSG?

No, as long as the child lives with their primary care giver – this can either be a parent, grandparent or anyone over 16 years old that is the main person responsible for caring for the child. This cannot be someone who is being paid to care for the child.

• Can I apply for CSG for any number of children? Is there a limit?

Yes, SASSA will award a CSG for up to 6 children per caregiver.

• Can I qualify for a CSG even if I have a job?

Yes, as long as you meet the “means test” criteria, earning up to R61 200 per year if single or R122 400 per year if married. If you earn more than these amounts, you may not qualify. These amounts are valid as of October 2023 and are subject to change each year.

• Can I apply online or in-person for the CSG?

Yes, you can use either method, whichever is easiest for you. In both methods you will need to provide certain documentation, such as your own ID document, the baby’s birth certificate, proof that you are the care giver of the child and proof of your household income. • Will I receive my CSG money right away?

No, it can take up to 90 days for SASSA to assess your application before you can start receiving your grant money.

• When, where can how will I receive my CSG funds?

The CSG grant is paid within the first few days of each month. You may find out the exact SASSA payment dates here. There are various ways to collect your SASSA grant – either into your personal bank account, collection in cash at selected retailers (such as Checkers, Pick n Pay etc.) or from specific institutions.
