  • What is the age criteria of the CSG?

This grant is intended for children under 18 years old – meaning children anywhere from newborn age up until the last day before their 18th birthday may qualify.

  • Must the child be living with one or both parents to qualify for the CSG?

No, as long as the child lives with their primary care giver – this can either be a parent, grandparent or anyone over 16 years old that is the main person responsible for caring for the child. This cannot be someone who is being paid to care for the child.

  • Can I apply for CSG for any number of children? Is there a limit?

Yes, SASSA will award a CSG for up to 6 children per caregiver.

  • Can I qualify for a CSG even if I have a job?

Yes, as long as you meet the “means test” criteria, earning up to R61 200 per year if single or R122 400 per year if married. If you earn more than these amounts, you may not qualify. These amounts are valid as of October 2023 and are subject to change each year.

Yes, you can use either method, whichever is easiest for you.
