Where to withdraw SASSA grant money

If you are one of the 16 million recipients receiving a grant each month, then you are very familiar with standing in a long line to withdraw your money.

Before you check where you can withdraw your social grant, it is important to check the SASSA payment dates. Social grants are paid out with the first few days each month – the Older Persons Grant is paid first, followed by the Disability Grant and then all other Social Grants (except for the SRD Grant which is paid as and when applications are approved).

Remember that you do not have to collect your payment on the exact day it is paid – the money will remain in your account until you are ready to withdraw it.

Where to get SASSA payment

You can either withdraw your money from any ATM (this includes Capitec, Absa, Standard Bank, FNB etc), or you can withdraw your money at these selected supermarkets:

  • Shoprite
  • Checkers
  • Pick ’n Pay
  • Boxer
  • U-save
  • and other selected outlets

Instead of withdrawing the cash, you are also able to use your SASSA gold card to purchase items at the above retailers. The gold card works like any regular bank card.

Keeping SASSA grant funds safe

SASSA advises grant recipients to create a PIN on their card when collecting their money at pay points. Do not let anyone “help” you withdraw money, unless it is an official bank employee who you have requested assistance from.

SASSA gold card expiry

Updated on 31 May 2023: SASSA Gold card holders whose cards expire in 2023, will be able to keep using their cards until 31 December 2023. This news comes from SASSA after major delays in grant recipients trying to collect their new gold cards from Post Offices across the country.
Expired gold card holders may still use their cards at ATM’s and retailers.
