SASSA Grants Increases from 1 April 2025

At the 2025 Budget Speech, on 12 March 2025, it was announced that SASSA social grants will see an increase for the 2025/2026 term.

How much will my social grant increase?

Great news for people who get SASSA grants! Starting from 1 April 2025, your grants will increase by 5.9%. Here’s what it looks like:

  • If you’re getting the Old Age grant, you’ll get an extra R130 from 1 April, bringing your total monthly grant to R2 315 a month if you are under 75 years old and R2 336 a month if you are over 75 years old.
  • If you’re getting the War Veterans grant, you’ll get an extra R130 from 1 April, bringing your total monthly grant to R2 335 a month.
  • If you’re getting the Disability grant, or care dependency grant, you’ll get an extra R130 from 1 April, bringing your total monthly grant to R2 315 a month.
  • If you’re getting the Foster Care grant, you’ll get an extra R70, bringing your total monthly grant to R1 250 a month.
  • If you’re getting the Child Support grant or the Grant-in-Aid grant, you’ll get an extra R30 from 1 April, bringing your total monthly grant to R560 a month.

Will the SRD grant increase?

Also, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which was started to help people during the Covid-19 pandemic, is being extended for another year. Even though the government has a tight budget, they’ve set aside R35.2 billion to keep paying the R370 SRD grant until March 2026.

What else should I know about the 2025 Budget Speech?

The government plans to spend a total of R422 billion on social development in the next year, and that amount will rise to R452.6 billion by 2028. A big chunk of that (about 81%) will go toward social grants to help people in need.

Even though the government is spending more, they’ll also need to make sure they are spending money wisely to keep the system running for the long term. They expect the number of people getting grants to increase a little bit, mainly because there will be more older people who need help in the future. To save money, they will focus on making sure everyone who gets a grant is properly checked.

So, in short: your grant is going up in April 2025, and the government is continuing to help people in need, but they’ll need to keep things running efficiently to make sure the support lasts!
