SRD Grant Reapplication NOT required for April 2023

SASSA confirms SRD Grant recipients do not have to reapply

All active SRD R350 grant recipients should note that they do NOT have to reapply to keep receiving the COVID-19 SRD grant funding. This was confirmed by SASSA on their official Twitter page, on 21 April 2023. The SRD grant was extended until 31 March 2024, and recipients will automatically be verified each month to confirm that they still qualify.

All applications or reapplications made since April 2022 will automatically be considered for each month until March 2024. All SRD grant recipients need to do is conduct a SASSA status check each month, to check when their payment date will be.

How can I update my SRD grant details?

Existing applicants can also update their responses to the screening questionnaire at any time, if their circumstances change, as well as to correct any errors on their previous application.

Who can apply for the SRD grant?

The SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant is intended for the poorest people in the country who have no (or very little) financial means to support themselves. The R350 grant is a temporary provision of assistance to help recipients meet their most basic needs.

In order to receive the SRD grant, applicants must answer “YES” to all of the following questions:

Do you reside within South Africa?
Are you a South African Citizen, a Refugee in South Africa, an Asylum Seeker in South Africa with a valid section 22 permit or visa or a Special Permit Holder in South Africa (under the Special Angolan Dispensation, the Lesotho Exemption Permit Dispensation or the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Dispensation)?
Are you between the ages of 18 and 60 years old?
Are you unemployed or do you receive less than R624 or less per month into your bank account?
Are you NOT receiving financial support from any other source?
Do you have insufficient financial means to support yourself?
Are you NOT receiving any other social grants for yourself?
Are you NOT contributing towards the UIF fund or NOT eligible for UIF payment?
Have you NOT unreasonably refusing to accept employment or educational opportunities?
Are you NOT receiving a stipend from NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme)?
Are you NOT residing in a government funded or subsidized institution?

The Social Relief of Distress grant is also awarded to people who:

Are awaiting payment of an approved social grant
Depend on a breadwinner who has been assessed to be disabled for a period of less than 6 months
Depend on a breadwinner who has died and an application is made within 12 months after the death of the breadwinner
Depend on a breadwinner who has been admitted to a public or private institution for a minimum of 1 month
Depend on a breadwinner who does NOT receive any maintenance from a person who is legally obliged to pay maintenance to them
Have been affected by a disaster as defined in the Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, 1978

How long can I receive the SRD grant for?

The SRD grant is intended to be granted for only 3 months, however, it can be extended if the recipients circumstances do not improve.

On Wednesday 26 October 2022 (during his Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement) Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the SRD Grant will be extended to March 2024. However, according to Mr. Godongwana, this extension will result in other grant recipients expecting a cutback on their grant amounts in the years to come. Mr. Godongwana stated that the National Treasury had still not found a way to replace or fund a replacement for a temporary COVID-19 (SRD R350) grant.

How to apply for the SRD grant

There are 3 ways to apply for the COVID-19 SRD grant: via WhatsApp, the SRD website or the SASSA chatbot.

SRD application via WhatsApp

Send a message to 082 046 8553
Submit your personal details
Wait for an SMS which will include a reference number, an OTP and website link
Click on the link in the SMS, fill in your OTP and verify
Provide your surname and ID number
Confirm your details as provided on the chat

SRD application via the SRD website

Visit the SRD website on your web browser (cellphone, tablet, desktop etc)
Provide your cellphone number and ID number
Click on the “send SMS” button
Wait for an SMS which will include a 6 digit OTP
Insert the OTP number and click “verify pin”

SRD application via the SASSA chatbot

Visit the SASSA website on your web browser (cellphone, tablet, desktop etc)
Click on the SRD R350 Grant assistance chatbox
Provide your cellphone number and ID number
Choose the apply for SRD R350 grant option
Wait for the link to the SRD website
