What Is the SASSA SRD Grant?
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a temporary financial support grant provided by the South African Social Security Agency to qualifying unemployed South Africans who have little or no income.
The SRD grant currently pays R370 per month to approved applicants.
The grant has been extended until March 2027.

SRD Payment Dates
Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant payment dates are usually released monthly.
Payments are processed in batches, meaning:
- not all applicants are paid on the same day,
- payment dates may differ between beneficiaries.
Approved But Still Not Paid
If your application is approved but payment has not arrived:
- banking verification may still be processing,
- your bank may still be clearing the payment,
- your payment batch may not yet be released.

Payment Methods for SRD Grant
SASSA offers several convenient ways to receive your grant payments, depending on the type of grant you’re applying for:
CashSend through a Retailer: If you don’t have a bank account, SASSA offers a CashSend option, allowing you to receive your payment at selected retail partners like Shoprite, Checkers, USave, and Pick n Pay. You’ll receive an SMS with instructions on how to collect your money.
Direct Deposit into Your Bank Account: This is the most preferred method. If you’ve provided your banking details, the grant will be directly deposited into your account. Note that bank payments are generally faster.

What “Declined” Means

What This Means

SRD Grant Eligibility Requirements

Why was my SRD Grant Application Declined?

Your SRD Grant application may be declined for different reasons. Below is a simple explanation of what each decline reason means:
- alternative_income_source_identified
- what it means: You received more than R624 into your bank account for that month. The SRD Grant is meant for people with little or no income. If more than R624 was deposited into your account (no matter who sent it), your application may be declined.
- identity_verification_failed:
- what it means: Your personal details do not match the records at the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). Check that your personal information on your SRD grant application matches up with your full name and ID number as stated on your official identity document.
- existing_sassa_grant:
- what it means: You already received another SASSA grant during that period. The SRD Grant is only available to people who are not receiving other social grants.
- debtor:
- what it means: SASSA believes you received grant payments by mistake when you did not qualify. Your payments may be paused while SASSA recovers the outstanding amount. If you still qualify afterwards, payments can continue.
- nsfas_registered:
- what it means: You received funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). People receiving NSFAS funding do not qualify for the SRD Grant.
- uif_registered:
- what it means: You received UIF benefits during that period. The SRD grant is not available for recipients who receive UIF (due to unemployment, illness, maternity/ paternity leave or adoption leave).
- gov_payrol_registered:
- what it means: You were employed by a government institution during that period. Government employees do not qualify for the SRD Grant.
- age_outside_range (>60):
- what it means: You are older than 60 years old. You do not meet the SRD age requirements. Instead, you may be able to apply for the old age grant.
- age_outside_range (<18):
- what it means: You are younger than 18 years old. The SRD Grant is only for adults. Instead, your primary care giver may be able to apply for the child support grant.
- deceased_record_on_DHA:
- what it means: The Department of Home Affairs has marked you as deceased on their system. Once a recipient has passed away, SRD payments cannot continue or be claimed by family members.
- referred_linked_risk_mobile:
- what it means: SASSA detected suspicious or possibly fraudulent activity linked to the cellphone number used in the application.
- referred_safps:
- what it means: SASSA found that your details are listed with the South African Fraud Prevention Services (SAFPS) for fraud-related activity.
Applying for reconsideration of SRD grant
You may apply for reconsideration within 30 days of receiving the declined reason. You may request reconsideration for each month that your application is declined. You can apply for reconsideration in either of these ways:

What to do if your SRD grant is not approved
If your grant application was not approved, you will receive communication in writing from SASSA. If you disagree with the decision, you can appeal within 90 days of being notified that your application was unsuccessful (read below how to submit an appeal). Your appeal must be submitted to the Minister of Social Development at the national office of the Department of Social Development.
